Updated: Mar 5, 2019
Everyday we receive phone calls from men who are experiencing some sort of erectile difficulty. Whether it is full blown erectile dysfunction or unreliable erections, men are conflicted by this condition when they experience it. For some, erections started to wave away slowly. For others, erections disappeared almost overnight.
One of the questions we are asked the most: is ED a natural part of aging?
Can you relate? “I am 49 years old and I can’t keep my erections anymore. It is embarrassing and frustrating. But I guess it just means I am getting old”.
“As soon as I turned 50 my erections went away. Have I lost my erections forever?”
“About 6 months ago I noticed my erections were not as hard and I am not able to sustain them in order to be able to have sex. I am only 37 years old. Does this happen to all men approaching 40?”
If you are wondering if ED comes with aging, the answer is not necessarily. There could be many reasons why a man could develop ED. To learn more about the causes of ED, visit my post “ED Doesn’t Have to Be Part of Aging”. It is important to know that all men may experience some sort of erectile difficulty in his lifetime. Moreover, ED is not exclusive to aging men; young men could also experience ED. But how can you avoid aging and developing ED? Here’s how.
How You Can Age Without ED
Exercise: Regular exercise boosts cardiovascular health, testosterone production, gives you stamina and strength and is a mood enhancer. All these ingredients work to preserve your erections as you age. Results of a Harvard study reported that regular exercise leads to a 41% reduction in the risk of erectile dysfunction — that’s about 30 minutes of walking a day. Additionally, a randomized clinical trial reported that moderate exercise (averaging less than 28 minutes a day) can help restore sexual function in obese, middle-aged men with ED.
Eat right: It is right that you are what you eat, and that includes your penis. The right foods may prevent disease and act as mood and body enhancers. Moreover, according to WebMD, some foods such as watermelon, dark chocolate and nuts, among others, can enhance sexual performance.
Control your weight: Weight puts a strain in your cardiovascular system and your pelvic floor. When your heart does not work well, your penis can’t work well. A study published by the National Institutes of Health indicates that erectile dysfunction among obese men are significantly higher in frequency than in general population. Therefore, obesity is “beyond any doubts an independent risk factor of erectile dysfunction.” Thus, controlling the weight should be a protective factor against ED.
Do not smoke or quit ASAP: Smoking causes hardening of the arteries, which lead to the penis not being able to receive enough blood to create or sustain erections. In 2004, the Surgeon General of the United States included ED as one of the conditions caused by smoking. The International Society of Sexual Medicine reports that men who smoke are at a higher risk for developing ED. Usually, ED is seen more in men who smoke heavily or who have smoked for a long time. Secondhand smoke has also been linked to ED.
Limit your alcohol intake: Have you noticed that when you have one too many drinks, your erections won’t happen or become unreliable? There is an adverse relationship between excessive drinking and ED. Moreover, according to the Indian Journal of Psychiatry, sexual dysfunction, including ED, is common among individuals with alcohol abuse. Heavy drinking is an increased risk factor for ED.
Do not consume illegal drugs: Not a good idea, but especially to preserve the integrity of your erections and sexual drive. A study conducted the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that Illicit drug male abusers are prone to have ED, suffer from decreased sexual desire, and have difficulty ejaculating.
Take care of your pelvic floor: Pelvic floor dysfunction is linked to ED and ejaculatory disorders. The good news is that pelvic floor exercises and rehabilitation can lead to long term benefits when it comes to combating ED. A study by BJUI, the leading urology medical journal, concluded that that pelvic floor exercises (including Kegels) should be a first-line approach to treat men with ED and seeking a long-term resolution of their erectile dysfunction.
Take care of your prostate: The prostate is an essential part of the male sexual system. An enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), prostatitis, and prostate cancer could all be culprits for ED. Make sure to schedule periodic prostate screenings. Additionally, the American Urological Association recommends following a heart-healthy diet with low animal fat and low in simple carbohydrates, including sugar. Exercise and weight management are also key. Stress reduction and eating more fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants may protect your prostate. Soy and green tea may also have prostate protective properties. Eating more fish, a good source of omega-3 fatty acids is a good idea as well. Prostate massage, if done properly, may help preserve your prostate and your erections and reverse ED.
Take care of your mental and emotional health: Anxiety, stress, depression, can all hinder your ability to be fully functional when it comes to sex. Additionally, medications to manage these conditions can also be culprits for ED. According to an article published by Psychology Today, many men’s ED is caused by psychological issues. Therefore, it is in your best interest to learn to destress, relax and practice mindfulness.
Use your penis! When it comes to your penis, it is true that if you don’t use “it” you lose “it”. Yes, the penis depends on oxygen and oxygen is fed to the penile tissue through blood. Additionally, the nerve endings that help create erections must be stimulated in order for them to work. A study conducted by the American Journal of Medicine found that the less frequent a man has sex, the greater his risk of developing ED. Conversely, the more erections you have, the better oxygenated your penis will be, thus preserving it for use in the later years. Therefore, have sex often and masturbate often. Those are the doctor’s orders!
